Plant biology text book selected for prestigious Choice award

Functional Biology of Plants, a text book co-authored by Exeter Professor Emeritus, John Bryant and Martin Hodson from Oxford Brookes University, has been listed as an Outstanding Academic Title by Choice.

Choice reviews academic books and electronic resources of interest to the higher education sector and publishes a list of outstanding academic titles each year.

The beautifully illustrated Functional Biology of Plants provides students and researchers with a clearly written, well-structured whole plant physiology guide. It delivers essential information on molecular and cellular processes so readers can understand how these processes are integrated into the development and function of the plant at whole-plant level. The book has text boxes throughout which explain particular aspects of how humans make use of plants.

Professor Bryant from University of Exeter said:When we were commissioned by Wiley to write Functional Biology of Plants, we knew it would be a challenge. It was to be a plant physiology book with a difference, in which details of biochemical, genetic and cellular mechanisms are woven into their context in the lives of real plants. Further, it had to be written in a style that would appeal to students and to researchers alike. We worked hard with the publishers to produce a book that, in addition to being good, also looked good; overall we were pleased with the final result. We were even more pleased as the reviews began to come in and this prestigious accolade from Choice is a very welcome, and unexpected, affirmation of our work.”

The guide, which includes a comprehensive glossary for those coming to the subject from other areas of life science, was published by Wiley in April 2012.
