Welcome to Dr Stefano Pagliara, a new lecturer in Exeter Biosciences

The Exeter Biosciences department is pleased to welcome Dr Stefano Pagliara, recently appointed Lecturer in Biosciences, working on the analysis of single cells with microfluidics tools. Currently based in Lab231 Geoffrey Pope building, he will be moving to the Living Systems Institute to pursue his interdisciplinary projects, which sit at the frontier between Biosciences and Physics.

With his background in Biophysics and Nanoscience, Dr Stefano Pagliara first visited the University in August 2013 as an invited speaker to the joint Exeter - Cavendish meeting on Membrane Biophysics and Evolutionary Systems Biology. At this time, he was a Leverhulme Research Fellow at the Cavendish Laboratory in the University of Cambridge and he enjoyed visiting the Department of Biosciences and discovering the University's vision of systems biology.

Shortly after receiving a Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship, he decided to join Exeter Biosciences to pursue his work on single cell analysis with microfluidics tools. This next generation tool, as well as his optical tweezers, will be very helpful to develop our understanding of all types of cells (such as microbial cells, stem cells and, cells of the immune system).

He is currently based in the Geoffrey Pope building with his MRes. Student, Ashley; he has also already started several collaborations with our staff (including Prof. Richard Titball, Prof. Ken Haynes, Dr Richard Chahwan, Prof. Rob Beardmore and Dr Ivana Gudelj) and scientists in the Physics department (such as Prof. Peter Winlove and Prof. Christian Soeller).

Dr Stefano Pagliara is currently looking for PhD students, in order to expand his team. He will give a talk about microfluidics, a “powerful tool for next generation life research”, during his Biosciences seminar on 13th of November 2014.

Date: 11 November 2014
