Overview

I am a postdoctoral research fellow in the Exeter Microbial Biofuels Group (EMBG) for Professor John Love. During my Ph.D. in the EMBG, I investigated the phylogenetic relationships between living and fossil Botryococcus braunii algae. My roles in the EMBG involve being the principal operator of our flow cytometers and supporting with the imaging cytometer. Furthermore to cytometry, I perform both Illumina and Oxford Nanopore DNA sequencing for an array of different samples, ranging from palaeoenvironmental lake sediments, silage samples to more traditional bacterial cultures.

Research

Research interests

My research is focused on developing and engineering industrially relevant organisms for the production of biofuels. I have investigated the ancient genome of the alga Botryococcus braunii. Using a combination of flow cytometry and DNA sequencing I was able to extract sequenceable DNA from 8,500 year old colonies of B, braunii. and begin to explore the rationale for why the alga excretes hydrocarbons. Adjunct to the biofuels research I have been using Oxford Nanopore sequencing to study microbial communities in Holocene lake sediments, with a focus on how these species are linked to evidence for ancient agriculture.
