Overview

At an undergraduate and post-graduate level I studied biochemistry and molecular biology, but my post-doctoral research has been in bioinformatics. I also taught science for four years at a state secondary school. Within the department I have worked as part of Professor Nick Talbot’s Molecular Genetics group. I have also contributed bioinformatic analyses to other groups within the department. I have taught for a number of years on the MSc in Bioinformatics as well as the undergraduate Biological Sciences degree.

Research

Research interests

My main area of research is in the comparative genomics of fungi (mainly phytopathogens). To aid in this research I have developed a number of resources, including an EST database (cogeme.ex.ac.uk/) and phylogenetic pipeline. I have contributed analysis and annotation to a number of genome projects. My main area of focus now is the use of next-generation sequencing technology for comparative genomics, analysis of mutants and transcriptomics in the rice blast fungus Magnaporthe oryzae and other phytopathogenic fungi.
