Rachel Coppock
PhD Student

I am currently a PhD student within the College of Life and Environmental Sciences at the University of Exeter and based at Plymouth Marine Laboratory.  I am interested in understanding the impacts that marine plastic pollution has on marine life, specifically plastics < 5mm which are collectively termed microplastics.  I first became interested in marine plastic debris during my undergraduate degree, where I was involved in several projects investigating the presence of microplastics, firstly in the gastrointestinal tracts of stranded marine mammals and then in deep sea sediments.

Broad research specialisms:

  • Marine microplastic pollution
  • Natural benthic assemblages
  • Bentho-pelagic coupling

Marine Biology BSc. (hons) – Plymouth University (2011 – 2014)
