Overview

I am a multi-disciplinary Postdoctoral Researcher, based in The Bioeconomy Centre. 

A member of the Exeter Microbial Biofuels Group (EMBG) I use Imaging Flow Cytometry (IFC) to characterise bacterial phenotypes. I also use IFC to detect  environmental proxies such as pollution particles, microplastics and pollen in a raneg of environemntl samples including lake sediments, ice cores and even fatbergs. I am currently working in collaboration with Swansea University to develop an automated way to classify pollen in the environment, combinging IFC and AI.  

My research is mainly focused on exploring human-environment relationships. I have reconstructed air pollution histories that span the Industrial Revolution to present day using urban pond sediments in northwest, UK, and in China. These records reveal how air pollution has changed over time as the urban landscape has evoved. I have also mapped pollution deposition using  the geomagentic properties of contemporary dusts.
