Overview

I am an interdisciplinary marine microbiologist with varied interests in the evolutionary and ecological processes that shape the diversity, structure and function and of marine microbial communities, in particular primary producers. I am also interested in developing novel technologies for in situ molecular assessment of microbial function.

In my Oceanography degree, I specialized in marine microbiology (Prof. Mike Zubkov's lab) and then completed my PhD on the diversity, evolution and ecology of bioluminescent phytoplankton (Prof. Debora Iglesias-Rodriguez lab), both at the University of Southampton, UK. My initial postdoctoral research focused on the functional genomics of eco-evolutionary interactions among phytoplankton and zooplankton (Prof. Lutz Becks lab, Max PIanck Institute for Evolutionary Biology, Germany) and on freshwater phytoplankton methanogens (Prof. Hans-Peter Grossart lab, IGB, Germany). Driven by an interest in developing marine genomic observatories, I joined the biomedical field to learn about molecular biosensor approaches, both as a postdoctoral researcher (Prof. Hywel Morgan lab, University of Southampton) and as a senior scientist in industry (Atlas Genetics Ltd). 

I have now returned to phytoplankton research as a postdoctoral researcher in Dr. Adam Monier's lab, within the Living Systems Institute at the University of Exeter. The main focus of my current work is on phytoplankton-virus interactions. I am using novel chromosome conformation capture techniques in combination with transcriptomics and metabolomics to understand the mechanism and impact of virus infection on these key marine primary producers. I am also involved in research on the ecological role of viruses and on the environmental structuring of eukaryotic microbial communities in ocean regions susceptible to climate change.
