Dr Alexandra Kerbl

About me:

I am an engaged and enthusiastic morphologist by training, with focus on nervous systems and the mechanisms underlying their development, functionality and evolution. I am eager to embrace and modify novel (morphological, molecular and computational) techniques and protocols to approach new questions and challenges, so far focusing on mainly annelids and molluscs, but interested n all animals, tissues and materials. Most recently, I am integrating serial TEM-and CLSM-data to reconstruct the entire nervous system on the connectome-le-vel in a microscopic annelid, thus combining ultrastructural data with immunohistochemical labeling to test functional hypotheses.

March 2016 – August 2019 Postdoc at the Marine Biological Section, University of Copenhagen, DK (Core responsibilities: establishing protocols for fixation and further treatment of research specimens (microscopic marine worms) for electron microscopy and immunohistochemistry, reconstructing the nervous system, mapping of specific immunoreactivity patterns, maintaining cultures of research animals, supervising student projects (BSc, MSc), introducing visiting academia to lab equipment and protocols, maintaining lab supplies, helping in organizing and conducting teaching (BSc, MSc-courses)
