Overview

Biography (eg Background, Interests): Studied Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry at the University of Oxford. Undertook summer research projects at both the SAXS beamline at the UK national synchrotron facility, Diamond Light Source, and also in Ilan Davis’s lab in Oxford looking at Drosophila ‘P body’ location. Focused specialism towards structural biology of infectious diseases in the final year. Final year research project in Nicole Zitzmann’s lab investigated the potential for targeting ER-resident glucosidases with imino sugars as broad spectrum antivirals. PhD focus at Exeter has moved away from viruses and onto bacteria, specifically Coxiella burnetii. My project is part of a grant to develop a veterinary vaccine for this zoonotic pathogen.

Project Title: Defining the O-antigen biosynthetic pathways in zoonotic Coxiella burnetii

Supervisors: Nic Harmer (LSI Exeter), Clive Butler (Bioscience), Jo Prior (Dstl, Porton Down)

Funding Body: BBSRC (iCASE)

Project Description: Using structural biology and enzyme assays to assign function to predicted LPS-synthetic enzymes. Resolving the biosynthetic pathways for the LPS-linked O-antigen of Coxiella burnetii will facilitate production of this key virulence factor.
