Overview

My research focuses on the exploitation and status of marine vertebrate populations, in particular marine turtles, utilising satellite tracking and mark and recapture to understand the thermal ecology, sex ratios, habitat use, navigational abilitiies, growth rates and fecundity of individuals.   Given the importance of the thermal environment on these reptilian species, the potential effects of global climate change are a major issue for this group, and a focus for my research. I run a long-term field study of the marine turtle populations in Cyprus, on which many of our undergraduate students volunteer.

Research

Research interests

I work on a wide range of topics relating to marine biodiversity, monitoring and mapping species distributions and threats. My research also involves conservation assessments, working with government and non-governmental organisation to improve management and protection of species. Much of this work has resulted in the production of Biodiversity or Species Action Plans and has led to changes to legislation and the designation of protected areas. I led the IUCN Red List assessment for the green turtle (Chelonia mydas) in the South Atlantic and the Mediterranean.

Ecology of Marine Turtles

Understanding the ecology of species is essential for predicting and mitigating anthropogenic impacts and much of my research has focused on understanding life history traits and spatio-temporal behaviour of marine turtles, quantifying threats (including marine plastic, fisheries and climate change) and assessing population trends. My research also involves conservation assessments, working with government and non-governmental organisation to improve management and protection of species

Climate change and Marine Turtles

The predicted increases in environmental temperature associated with global climate change will have wide ranging impacts on marine turtles, including changing habitat availability for foraging and nesting and altering offspring production, potentially leading to increased wide-scale feminisation (marine turtles have temperature-dependent sex determination, and female offspring are produced at higher temperatures) and mortality, particularly under extreme climate warming scenarios. Understanding how marine turtles are adapting to current temperature rises allows us to predict future responses and plan to mitigate negative impacts.

Life History Traits of Marine Turtles

At our long-term field site in Cyprus, we now have over 30 years of reproductive histories of the green and loggerhead (Caretta caretta) turtles that nests there. These data allow us to begin to answer questions such as; at what age do marine turtles reach sexual maturity, how long do marine turtles reproduce, how long do they live, and explore the trade-offs between growth and reproduction. Such data are important for population models that inform conservation assessments and have been used in the IUCN RedList assessments.

Research projects

Staff and students of the Marine Turtle Research Group are currently working in Ascension Island, Brazil, Cayman Islands, Congo, Gabon, Greece, Guinea Bissau, Madagascar, Northern Cyprus, Peru, Sao Tome and Principe, Turks and Caicos Islands and the USA. The Marine Turtle Conservation Project in Cyprus has been running since 1992 and each year 50-60 volunteers participate. If you are interested in applying please visit the project website www.cyprusturtles.org

Temperature, Sex Ratios, and Phenotypic Development

The effect of climate change on species whose sex is determined by temperature during embryonic development (Temperature-dependent Sex Determination (TSD), such as marine turtles, is likely to be considerable, making them important indicator species. Whilst the effect of temperature on sex ratio of marine turtle hatchlings has been well studied under laboratory conditions, there have been few field studies that have monitored the incubation environment of in situ clutches. To address these issues we have been studying the relationship between temperature, sex, embryo mortality and hatchling phenotype of marine turtle hatchlings at several field sites around the world.

Exploitation, Fluctuations and Recovery of Marine Turtle Populations

Many marine turtle populations are in decline or only recently recovering from past exploitation. Understanding the processes driving recovery and fluctuation of marine turtle populations are fundamental if we are to assess the current status of populations and direct conservation programmes.

Migration of Marine Turtles

In the last few years we have been making extensive use of satellite tracking to understand the movements of marine turtles. This not only enables us to plot their migration routes and identify their foraging and over wintering sites it also allows us to assess their fidelity to a nesting beach and gain a more accurate estimate of nesting frequency within a season. It also allows us to achieve a better understanding of the navigational abilities of marine turtles.
