I am a behavioural ecologist with interests in the evolution of social behaviour and the role of conflict in cooperation. I am interested in how individual behaviour can have group and population level effects in animal societies. I use behavioural observations and experiments to try to understand the link between cooperation and conflict.

Research

Research interests

My research investigates how conflict arises and is resolved in cooperative species.

My interests include:

  • The evolution and maintenance of cooperative behaviour, and the role of conflict in social evolution.
  • The causes and consequences of conflict both within and between groups in social species, and links between these types of conflict.
  • How individual level behaviour resonates through groups and populations to have higher level effects.

Research projects

I am currently working as part of the Banded Mongoose Research Project in the Socialis Research Group, led by Professor Michael Cant. I am investigating the ecological and evolutionary causes and consequences of intergroup conflict using a wild population of banded mongooses (Mungos mungo) as a model system.

In this project I aim to explain:

  • why groups engage in costly fights with one another
  • how intergroup conflict affects individual fitness and cooperative behaviour
  • how interactions between groups affects the behaviour and spatial organization of groups, and the dynamics of the wider population.

My PhD investigated conflict within and between groups of banded mongooses. I studied the causes and consequences of eviction of individuals from their social group, and the effects of eviction on population demography and dynamics. I examined the causes and consequences of intergroup fighting, and link between conflict within and between social groups.

For my MSc research project I investigated social aggression and the maintenance of stable dominance hierarchies in paper wasps (Polistes dominula) in southern Spain.
