EVOLUTION OF CILIOMOTOR NEURONS (PhD project)

The project focuses on ciliomotor neurons in the larvae of the marine annelid Platynereis dumerilii, that have recently been completely mapped by serial electron microscopy.

The ciliomotor system of Platynereis larvae consists of groups of cholinergic, serotonergic, dopaminergic, and adrenergic neurons. Neurons with the same transmitter identity in this circuit often have similar but non-identical projection patterns and synaptic connections. The main goal of the project is to dissect differences
in the transcriptome of these cells and how it relates to differences in function and connectivity. The project involves a combination of approaches, including transgenesis, single-cell transcriptomics, neuronal activity imaging, and single neuron ablations.

Research networks

The PhD project Evolution of ciliomotor neurons is a part of the EvoCell network. EvoCELL is a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network aiming at studying the evolution of cell-types and tissues in a diverse array of vertebrates and invertebrates. To do so, the labs involved in the network will use the most recent single-cell and tissue genomic techniques, merging them with more traditional disciplines. EvoCELL offers ambitious training programme, also in the non-academic sector. Scientific outreach and communication of the project results to a wider public are a fundamental part of the project and all fellows will contribute to it. The network brings together 8 academic and 2 non-academic organisations from 6 European countries.
