James' research interest is in mitosis and cell division, stimulated by the fundamental beauty of the process as viewed using a fluorescence microscope, and its key role in diseases such as cancer.

Deputy Head of Department
Professor Jamie Stevens
Jamie is an evolutionary biologist with wide-ranging interests in molecular ecology, population genetics and evolution. His research focuses on questions in the field of population/conservation genetics, with particular emphasis on applying knowledge of population genetic process to the management and conservation of Atlantic salmon and trout, and a variety of marine organisms.

Alan is a molecular microbiologist interested in mechanisms of virulence and niche adaptation in pathogenic bacteria.

Director of Research and Impact
Dr Eduarda Santos
Eduarda is an environmental biologist investigating how environmental stressors affect living organisms in aquatic systems, both within natural environments and in aquaculture. Her research focuses on fish and other aquatic invertebrates and has ranged from investigating the mechanisms of toxicity of environmental chemicals using (epi)genomics approaches, to understanding disease susceptibility within aquaculture.

Dr Nic Harmer
Nic's work aims to understand enzymes as biological catalysts. Nic seeks to understand enzymes individually from a structure-function perspective: determining their structure and aligning this to function using enzyme assays and complementary methods.
