Overview

Career And Qualifications

MCHEM from Oxford. PhD from Manchester. Researcher at Princeton, Stockholm, and KAIST.

I have also been a management consultant, brewer and minster for my sins (pun intended).

At Exeter since 2015 - possibly the best university in the world for student experience.

My duties at Exeter are oriented around three areas:

  1. Teaching: Practically-focussed chemistry at both the undergraduate and masters level.
  2. Research: Scanning probe microscopy (SEM, AFM, EDX, STEM, etc.) of organic crystallites.
  3. International: Summer schools, bilateral study, open days, and faculty lectures.

Teaching

Current students should look for me on ELE. A full list of present and past teaching responsibilities is on the teaching tab.

General Chemistry (BIO1347)

22 weeks. 22 practicals. Plenty of lectures and drop-ins. Comes with a textbook printed by me and completed by the students themselves.

Lockdowns showed that students were at their best with me (struggling with purpose to produce meaningful outcomes) when they were in the lab. This became a key motivator for the creation of this course. Starts with photons and their interactions with atoms and ends with enzymes and their function in organisms. Descriptor here.

Masters Modules (BIOM549 and NSCM009)

Bioimaging gives students the opportunity to use a range of microscopy techniques including confocal, AFM, SEM and TEM as well as develop grant application skills.

Conversely, students on Advanced Laboratory Skills focuses their efforts onto one of three streams working closely with professors on a practical problem. Report writing and poster presenting skills are tested here.

Descriptors here and here.

Research

Chemistry research is very much alive but nested in other departments. I personally have an over abundance of biological samples for me to test my hypotheses regarding organisms ability to exploit crystallisation processes.
