Project Title: The potential health effects of nanoparticles on fish

Supervisors: Professor Charles Tyler, Dr. Tetsuhiro Kudoh and Professor Tamara Galloway

Funding Body: NERC and Environmental Agency

Project Description:

My research is looking into the ecotoxicology of nanoparticles and their potential effects in fish. So far, I have investigated the uptake and effects of metal oxides nanoparticles in zebrafish embryos using a variety of end points: acute toxicity methods, apoptosis assays, morphological differences and Coherent Anti Raman Scattering imaging technique. I have also focused on zebrafish early life stages, and the application of molecular techniques; specifically adopting an integrative approach for identifying gene target tissues and effect mechanisms of metal/metal oxide particles using the in-situ hybridization procedure. My latest work entails an in vivo breeding exposure study via the diet of zebrafish to determine if nanoparticles can impact on the breeding of zebrafish (Danio rerio) and undergo maternal transfer with biological consequences for the subsequent offspring.
